Betony's Embroidery

Betony did a pouch with an marvelously embroidered flap as a prize for the heavy weapons tournament which took place at Tirnewydd's Red Dragon event held in the Fall of 1996. The artwork covers an area roughly 5 inches by 4 inches, and is totally embroidered within this area (including a white background) in the opus anglicanum style. The time to embroider this piece was around 900 hours. Here is a picture of the entire piece (560K) with details images from the claw (408K) and the wing (856K) areas.

In addition, here is an image (138K) of an early bit of her embroidery, done in the fall of 1995. It was her first attempt at embroidery in about eighteen years, and is an adaptation from Lord Tristan's artwork which was on the cover of the Pennsic XXIV Handbook. His work was in turn an adaption of a painting entitled ``Tristan Fighting His Rival Palamedes at a Tournament", which was executed in 1479-80 by Evard d'Espinque. This piece took roughly 4 to 6 hours a night for about a month (around 120 to 180 hours) to complete.
